The following are REAL questions that have come to our office, NOT a "cover" for more sales pitches (the ones like "Why are xxxx's prices so reasonable and save buyers up to 50%?"); we hope they will be helpful to you.  If there is something we didn't cover, please either e-mail us, or give us a call at the shop, and we will do our best to help.

1) Will my existing headboard work?

Yes, provided the new adjustable base is the same size as your old bed and frame.  The headboard brackets (included with each base) are reversible, and will adjust to fit all common headboard hole patterns.

2) Do I need special wiring or a dedicated circuit?

No.  All our bases use standard, grounded, household current, are U.L. listed, and pull very little amperage when running.  With the S-Cape base, we recommend use of an inexpensive surge suppressor to protect the motor's microprocessor.

3) I have a wooden frame bedstead, will the adjustable base fit?

Yes, in nearly all cases.  I have found a few rare cases where an antique bedframe was too small to work, but that is a rare occurrence.

 4) Does the bed qualify for a medical deduction?

It possibly could; I would check with your family doctor.  Many doctors prescribe adjustable beds for patients with gastric problems and poor circulation.

5) "My wife says I snore, will the adjustable base help?"

It very well may.  There are situations where raising the head portion of the bed has lessened snoring (or, you could do what my wife does - a sharp kick or a slap to the back of the head...)

6) What sizes to adjustable beds come in?

The most common sizes are:

Twin Extra Long 38" X 80"
Full Extra Long 54" X 80"
Queen 60"X 80"
Dual (Split) Queen 60" X 80" (2 Sections)
Dual (Split) King 76" X 80" (2 Sections)

A Dual Queen is comprised of two 30" X 80" bed bases put together to make a Queen.  A Dual Queen is also known as a Split Queen, and has individual controls for each side.

A Dual King is comprised of two Twin XL bases (38" X 80") put together to make a King.  As with a king size box spring foundation, the bases are split so they will fit through the door (and so it won't take Superman to carry one).  A Dual King (also known as a Split King) has individual controls for each section.  The Dual King setup will also fit inside a normal wooden king size bed frame.

7) What medical reasons would determine the need for an adjustable bed base?

Most often, adjustable bed bases are prescribed for patients with the following symptoms:

bulletGastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), which involves the backflow of stomach acid up into the esophagus, and tends to be most severe during sleep.
bulletHiatus Hernia; which causes symptoms much like Acid Reflux described above.
bulletSinusitis; Lifting up the head section can be invaluable in promoting sinus drainage, improving breathing, and reducing snoring.
bulletPoor circulation; head and/or foot elevation improves circulation and relieves lower back pressure and pain.
bulletVenous Insufficiency; in which the veins don't operate properly to return blood to the heart.  Elevating the legs (Trendelenberg position) lets gravity help improve blood flow and reduce swelling.

8) Are adjustable beds just for older people?

NO!!  I know several younger people who work from home that use their bed as a workstation, laptop computer and all.  Many people really enjoy reading and watching television that way; one customer told me their adjustable bed was more comfortable than their recliner in the den.

9) How high does the base sit off the floor?
With wheels installed the height is approximately 16.5" to the top of the adjustable base. The distance between the floor and the bottom of the adjustable base (with wheels installed) is approximately 8".

10) Can I add something to make the bed higher off the floor?
Due to engineering issues, riser kits are available in 1" and 3" heights only (please note that the riser kits replace the existing legs on the bed. Also note that the 1" riser is actually 5.25" inches, and the 3" riser is actually 7.25". They are referred to as the 1" and 3" because that's the difference in height from the standard leg. An adjustable base with 1" risers will measure 17.5" with wheels installed and 19.5" with the 3" kit. Standard Legs: 8" to bottom, 16.5" to top; 1" Riser Kit: 9" to bottom, 17.5" to top; 3" Riser Kit: 11" to bottom, 19.5" to top.

11) What is the weight limit of the beds?
Twin Long, Split Queen, Split CA King—325 lbs.;
Double Long—375 lbs.; Queen: 425 lbs.

12) If I have a problem with the bed, how do I get it taken care of?

Leggett & Platt does a great job of handling all warranty issues. An owner's manual is included with each adjustable bed which includes the toll free number for the nice folks at Leggett & Platt's Warranty Department in Linwood, NC; that toll-free number is 1-800-888-3078.  Note: a warranty card is included with the bed materials; please fill that out and mail it in the the factory to register your bed.  If you ever have a problem that you can't get an answer for, please give us a call at the shop here in Nashville, and we will be glad to help, as well.

13) Is there an extended warranty available for the bed bases?

Yes, a 5-year extended warranty may be purchased; the last price I had was $125. Call Leggett & Platt's warranty service center at 1-800-888-3078.

14) Where is the serial number on my bed base?

The serial number is on the frame right below the head which can be seen by lifting the head of the adjustable bed. The serial number should also be on the owner's manual.

15) I've never heard of Leggett & Platt; just who are they?

That's not surprising; unless you are "in the business" (or talking to someone like me that can't shut up), you would have no reason to hear of them.  They are a "component maker"; that is, they don't make hardly anything in a completed form, they make parts of products.  For instance, you probably can't sit down in a USA made recliner or lift chair that doesn't have a scissor mechanism (the part that makes the footrest go in and out) that isn't made by a Leggett & Platt company.  The same with springs for sofas and ottomans.

A little history:  Leggett & Platt was founded in 1883 by J.P. Leggett and C.D. Platt in Carthage, Missouri. The two partners invented the bedspring, and built their company into what now is a Fortune 500 corporation with some 32,000 employees worldwide. They have built adjustable sleep systems since 1973 and are the world's largest manufacturer of adjustable sleep systems.  And, in case you haven't figured out be now, we are one of their biggest fans.

16) I'm not sure I want to buy a brand/model I never heard of, maybe I should just buy a "name brand" system...

You could do that if you wish; that's why they call it "free enterprise".  But let me tell you a "dirty little secret" about the adjustable bed industry:  Bedding companies buy their bed bases from component makers, put their mattress on them, mark them up, and then turn around and sell them to consumers.  Take, for instance, the leading "NASA Approved, Certified by the Space Foundation" mattress company; they make a fine mattress, but they don't make the adjustable bed base that they sell; it is the exact same  "S-Cape" adjustable base we sell, with a different (some say cheaper) cover, and what they call a "special ergonomic" hand control (that has the same identical functions as ours, but looks somewhat like a sand crab...)   Oh, and also, it costs several hundred dollars more...

17) What is your return policy on adjustable bed bases?

We, like most of our competitors, don't take returns on adjustable bed bases.  Our sources won't take them back once they leave the factory, and after you figure the shipping costs (both ways) that we would have to charge for and the labor to replace the base cover (required by law), it just wouldn't be fair to you or economical to us to do returns.  I realize that there are come web sites that say they will "gladly accept returns up to 60 days"; Oh, I guess we could do that too, if we charged everyone an extra $400 - $600 a bed like they do, or if we sold cheaper-made beds for the same prices we charge now, or if we charged $500 shipping costs and 15-20% restock charges, or if we just argued, ignored, and  generally "wear-down" customers who wanted a return until they just gave up, or - well, you get the idea...

The thing to remember is that these bed frames have the absolute best customer service of any in the industry (please refer to my "Bobby's Notes" on the main Adjustable Bed page on the website); if ANY problems develop, the great folks in Linwood, NC will see that it's taken care of.  If you EVER have any problems that they can't help with, then please let us know here in Nashville, and we will work to get it resolved.

18) You say you have free shipping and setup; what's the "catch"?

There really isn't any catch; we offer free shipping and setup to all "normal" areas of the continental USA.  Now, IF you live on an island, or on the top of a mountain that you have to ride a mountain goat to get to, there will be a small additional charge (whatever the shipping company charges us), but we would always let you know that before the order is processed.  Please compare our shipping and setup policy to that of our competitors; some of these fine folks boldly advertise "Free Shipping", which means (to them) that they will deliver it - to your curb outside - for free, but IF you want someone to bring it inside, unpack it, and set it up, they charge an additional $200.00 to $300.00.  We could cut our prices a little, and then "add it back" for shipping like some do, but we thought it important to give you a total price, upfront, so you would know exactly what you would be paying.  Also, these beds are very heavy; you haven't had a "real workout" until you wrestle a full or queen adjustable bed through doors and up stairs...

19) How long will it take for me to receive my bed base?

We normally say 2 to 4 weeks in most cases, depending on several factors, such as where you live, what day of the week the order is processed, and any backlog at the factory.  It could be sooner than that, but I would rather "under-promise and over-deliver", than it happen the other way around...
